[unpaid/sample/affiliate/ad] I’ve got to admit to major scepticism when I came across this collection from Pacifica largely because the ingredient melatonin just made me think ‘marketing dose’ immediately. However, on researching a bit, melatonin has been an up and coming ingredient in the US for a couple of year and is only just filtering through to here.
The melatonin dose in the Pacifica ‘Wake Up Beautiful’ range is nothing to do with helping you sleep although the collection is structured around night products. It’s more that it has got very good anti-oxidant properties and as skin does most of its repair at night, it makes sense that it is supported at that time. Wash off products don’t really have a lasting effect on the skin because of the, er, washing off, but I really enjoyed using the Dream Jelly Face Wash for the texture more than anything else.
This wash is a gel to foam format – it’s very silky and gentle feeling and my face felt properly cleansed afterwards. It’s not what I’d use as a make-up remover but more a day to day complexion wash. It also contains retinol which the brand bills (across the range) as ‘petroleum free’. I’ve Googled whether retinol contains petroleum commonly because I have never heard of that being an issue, and I’m up to page 5 and still no references to petroleum in retinol. They also refer to the ingredient as ‘retinoid’ rather than retinol – retinol is a form of retinoid, retinoid is usually a term used for prescription strength retinol but as this is a product that can be bought in store I don’t know why it’s used. And also, I don’t think it should be this hard and complicated to understand a cleanser.
I’ve used the Wake Up Beautiful Overnight Retinoid Cream for a couple of nights only – it’s actually quite a light moisturiser despite being a buttery consistency. I like the idea of melatonin in skin care for supporting antioxidant protection so on that front, I’m in. I don’t, as standard, use any form of retinol so I was glad that my skin took to it very easily. Longer term, there may be some effect on skin smoothness but I didn’t test for nearly long enough. I feel this is aimed at a younger audience – it’s certainly priced more accessibly – the cleanser is £16 HERE and the night cream is £25 HERE. This is a vegan range which also contains mushroom extracts and quinoa – the first for reducing inflammation and the second for promoting collagen and antioxidant protection. I like the products but feel I had to work really hard to read between the lines to find out what I was really getting.

Yep, this all retinol-around thing is rather confusing… At The Ordinary they have retinoid AND retinol of different strengths and retinoids are milder/weaker so then you can build up your tolerance and move to retinols, but it may be brand-specific and not universal… What it can do in a minute or two of washing – a mystery to me but package is lovely 🙂
the packaging IS lovely :-))))
