[purchase/affiliate] I keep promising not to do another homage to H&M but I had a little try on of this white denim jacket in store on Thursday and it’s just the answer to what to wear over any dress. White trainers optional but it’s a very good look. These pictures are from the changing rooms in my most scruffy yoga kit :-(.
As you can see, it hits at just the right point to wear with a dress (I mean, wear it with anything but to me it’s a perfect dress jacket) leaving enough of the dress showing and without looking like the jacket is swamping you. This is a size M and is the right fit – I tried L and it was way too big so do check the sizing if you order on line. I thought I would be L in this. It’s sitting just below my waist (I’m 5ft 3) which given my short legs, proportions me perfectly leaving a long flow of dress. The one thing I’d say is that the fabric isn’t a super soft denim but I think with wear it will soften down. It will need plenty of washing as all white things do so don’t forget to put in a bit of fabric conditioner. The other feature to note is a slight dropped shoulder – that makes it look less structured and feel less restrictive than your traditional denim jacket and works really well with the boxy cut of this.
It’s really very non-fussy for a denim jacket so in it’s own understated way it’s the more modern version of a cardi – something to chuck on over anything. Plus, white is just the best light bringer so notice your complexion glow more. I’ve got a green dress and a black dress that this is already ear-marked for but I also think anything floral or geometric would be great. It’s £34.99 and goes from XS to XL HERE.
I bought this delight from TKMax for £16.99 – I’m so happy with it. It’s just a little bit hippyish with wild strawberries in the pattern of stars and flowers. That’s a very good neckline for me – I keep the ties undone and wear it with my bootcut jeans. The reverse re sizing occurs with this top – I’m in a 14 here and it’s the perfect fit for me. I used my eye on it and thought it looked small for that size. The sleeves cover the tops of my arms, the elastic isn’t punishing and the slight pleats make it hang beautifully. I feel I have had a bargain and I’ll wear it a lot over the summer. It’s in sizes 8 to 18 HERE.

Amazing, thank you for this tip! Years ago I spent my second-ever paycheck as a new civil engineer on a similar jacket in beige corduroy from Levi’s. I thought to myself that it would stand the test of time and it HAS been a staple in my wardrobe for 20+ years! Even with the fabric thinning over the elbows I have a hard time letting it go. Levi’s hasn’t brought out anything similar in the years I’ve checked, but now I know to go to H&M instead. Again, thank you Jane!!!
So welcome! I think it’s a great find for over dresses – or anything really – just to be a bit different to a cardigan – I hate cardigans!
