[unpaid/sample] Well, this is nice! An unexpected return for Steam Cream. I’ve still got a tin of Steam Cream from when it was first here (with a poodle on it!) and I used to love the new drops whenever there were design updates. If I can jog your memory for a moment, Steam Cream uses a steam emulsification process that makes the ensuing cream lighter than air and loose in consistency. In turn, that makes it very light and easy to apply to the skin without reducing the hydration – it absorbs fast and leaves no residue.
Not only is are there new products (cleansing balm and toner), but I see that they’re using different ingredients across the collection. I seem to remember last time it was always the same formula, just different tins. Japanese Citrus uses sugar squalane and Citrus Sudachi Peel extract (which gives it a little bit of a citrus scent).
The formula is based around oat derivatives so it’s really very gentle, and along with almond oil, cacao butter and jojoba oils, what you get is a simple moisturiser that really does the job. Because of the steaming process, it has to be made by hand and is made in Japan in small batches.
The Cleansing Balm uses the same oils as the original Steam Cream (almond, grapeseed, oat kernel, sugar squalane) in a tri-phase formula that starts as a balm, becomes and oil and rinses away as a milk. I prefer just the single phase balms to be honest, but this did leave my skin feeling lovely and fresh. It will tackle make-up although I didn’t put it to the waterproof mascara test.
I’m really glad to see the return of Steam Cream – it’s such a welcome distraction from complicated formulas offering eternal youth and radical transformations. You will get beautifully moisturised skin from this that is silky to the touch and completely comfortable. The pretty tins are an extra bonus. Of course, it’s a bit more expensive now at £15.95 HERE for the Japanese version and £13.95 for original. Travel sizes are £7.95. I seem to think the original was around the £12 mark last time. If you love it, you can supersize because the brand now has larger tins, too.

Wow, I remember them from years ago when blogging and social media was still fun and friendly. I still have several of the empty tins too. Remember when we all re-purposed them? Its nice to see them back and I’m going to look at the cleansing balm.
oh those were the days!!
Wow I remember the original steam cream – always wanted one but couldn’t justify the expense as a student! I think the cream could slot in really well to so many skincare routines (especially as so many of us use serums for our heavy-hitting actives) – it’s nice to have a simple elevated basic that you can add in as and when you need.
I agree with you – and you’ve put it so much more eloquently than I did!
YAY!! Steam cream!! I still have some of the old empty tins. Great to know it’s back. The lavender original maybe wasn’t to everyone’s fancy but the citrus sounds awesome!
Isn’t it funny that we have all kept our tins!!
Jane thank you for highlighting this. I still have an old Union Jack tin that I use.
I’ve just placed an order as I think the tins make lovely gifts. I will keep a couple for myself too
You’re welcome – yes, I’m pleased to see it back too.
