When the Liz Earle team changed the packaging and formula of their best-selling Instant Boost Skin Tonic, let’s just say there was much pearl-clutching and disapproval. So guess what? The team listened and put it right back into the original, beloved bottle and reinstated the original formula. I just need to say the amount of times a beauty brand truly listens to its customers and then takes positive action to address the concerns is negligible. It so rarely happens that I’m leading with that fact before I talk about the product. It’s exactly this kind of listening that allows us to bond with a brand in a landscape that’s noisy, cluttered and unfocussed. So, the calm and reliability of this response is as perfect as the Tonic itself.
I think we got used to the idea that skin doesn’t ‘need’ toning, but I’d say this falls somewhere between a toner and an essence and is perfect for hot, bothered skin or adding a cooling, hydrating element after cleansing and before moisturising. The key ingredients of calendula, chamomile, cucumber and aloe vera are delicious.
I have some tips to use the Tonic to its full potential that also indicate how multi-tasking it can be.
- Hot Night Soothing. Pour a little Instant Skin Boost Tonic into a spritz bottle – if you wake up too hot in the night, you can spritz the soothing formula over your face and chest and let it dry naturally. As it dries, it will allow you to feel cooler without stripping your skin.
- Intensive Refreshing Mask. Cut into strips or split some cotton wool squares so they’re as thin as you can make them (the woven cotton pads are best) and soak them in Tonic from the fridge. Lay the strips over your skin and allow them to refresh and reboot your complexion for a few relaxing minutes, taking out any heat and calming without drying.
- The delicate fragrance of rose geranium, lavender and sweet orange is something to savour – use the Liz Earle re-usable face pads (free with the code TONIC) sprinkled with Tonic to pat gently against your skin, inhaling the scent to fully enjoy the moment.
This product has won so many awards and I completely see why – it’s even better that the packaging is made from 50% recycled material, and all ingredients are traceable and cruelty free. You can find Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic HERE for £16.50. Sometimes the originals are the best – and in this case the customer was right 😊

Ah- Liz Earle is one of those great British brands that often gets ignored in the newness hype, but hand on heart the Cleanse and Polish is, to my mind, one of the best all rounder’if you just want one’ cleansers out there. I’ve introduced my Mum and Sis to it and they agree. Good to read the tonic formula is now back to the original ( and the original packaging is a gem of elegant efficiency). Hoping the formula for the two minute mask will follow the same route ( not quite pearl clutching, but on the edge of Wookie Howl for that one, as it was such a great perky up-a-fier).
Yes, consistently reliable as a brand and genuine listeners. I’ll mention the 2 Minute Mask!
Yay! Excellent news. Completely agree with you both. It’s a really good workhorse product, you can even swipe on those areas like backs of knees and feet for an instant soothe.
Lovely top in the photo Jane x
Thanks Chrissie – yes, it’s a great product and you’ve given me even more ideas!! Top an H&M cheapie :-))
I wish they’d to the same for the moisturiser. The re formulation isn’t anywhere near as soothing as the original. I gave it a shot but I wont buy another once I finish this jar, unfortunately.
Well, you never know…
I’m so pleased that Liz Earle bought the original formula of Instant Skin Tonic back as it’s my favourite skin toner, & have been using it for nearly 20 years!
I heard some many bad reviews about the new formula that I daren’t even try it!
So I ordered the new ‘old formula’ last week & it’s arrived today with the free reusable face pads!
I’m a very happy bunny
P.S. Off topic I’m loving the Nars Climax mascara. It doesn’t irritate my eyes (contact lens wearer here) & doesn’t budge even when I had some really bad news a few weeks ago & had a massive weeping session.
My best friend was with me & was really impressed with the mascara whilst also managing to comfort me at the same time & treating me to lots of chocolate ☺️
So I bought her one as a gift & she loves it!
Well, that’s a shout out for NARS isn’t it – to withstand a big weep is quite something. Thank you for the recommendation 🙂
I used the original for years and then stopped when they changed the formula. I bought the ‘returned’ version from Liz Earle and it’s still not the same as the original. Others have agreed with me so I’m not sure they have replicated the original formula as they say they have……
Interesting… I just didn’t know it well enough to do a confident comparison.
