[unpaid/sample/affiliate/ad] I’m already a REN fan – I recommend Evercalm to just about anyone who ever asks what they should be using for skin that’s acting up – and now I’ve discovered REN Everhydrate, I’m just even more convinced of this brand’s efficacy. It’s not all love though – generally, I think most of REN is just too pricy and that they price themselves out of a much bigger audience and customer base but the Everhydrate duo is an exception. It will so out-moisturise any other moisturisers that, if you have dry skin, it will probably worth every last penny.
Both are suitable for sensitive and eczema prone skin. REN Everhydrate Marine Moisture Serum contains hyaluronic acid and polyglutamic acid lock in moisture, green caviar algae (so called because the ‘bubbles’ look a bit like caviar but are just seaweed) and Rosella which is a botanical extract that is generally used as a potent anti-oxidant and natural emollient which softens and hydrates.
The REN Everhydrate Marine Moisture Replenish lives right up to its name – replenishing is exactly the right word for this. 100% of people both these products were tested on showed ‘an increase in moisture retention’ – up to 48 hours (135 people, varying ages). I’m sending you to M&S for this because REN is listing out of stock – it has the serum as ‘early access’ but M&S have both the serum and the moisturiser in stock now. One ingredient is listed as ‘Hydrating Freshwater Plant’ as an ingredient but I can’t find out what this actually is but after searching google I’m up to speed on every kind of pond plant. Otherwise, it’s hyaluronic and polyglutamic acid and algae in a richer base. I haven’t done an ingredient deep dive – I almost don’t care what’s in it because it just works.

I’ve tried both under make up – serum is best for that and do give it a couple of minutes to settle into your skin – and I’m juggling in my mind about whether you would need both. I think the most compelling formula is the serum and add what you have at home over the top but if you prefer a cream, opt for that instead. You will absolutely notice the difference in your skin hydration levels – it’s gentle, fresh feeling (actually feels a bit cooling) and a complete blessing for dry skin. The serum is £40 HERE and the cream is £35 HERE. These are nice season change products in that they feel light but deliver heavy.

I gave up on Ren about 12 years or so ago. I was an early adopter of their products when they first appeared on the market about 20 or so years ago, but became very frustrated with their constant discontinuation of products – they would launch gorgeous products (the one I still miss is their beautiful rosewater mist) and then discontinue them a year or so later. The final nail in the coffin was when I received a free set of minis with a magazine and saw that they had been made in PRC!! I wrote to Ren to let them know how I felt about that and received such a snotty response I stopped buying them because I felt so dismissed as a customer.
Sad really, brands should listen to their loyal customers.
Have they been bought out by new owners in the last few years?
They’re owned by Unilever – bought in 2015 – I’ve also been a fan since the beginning but have never known them use PRC for products so that’s really very interesting. Also, customer service is an absolute art – and very few brands understand that. I’ve never had occasion to be in touch with REN’s but I bet it’s improved!
Hi Jane, they told me they’d had their free mini products made in PRC for the particular magazine in order to make it financially viable and told me that their normal retail products are all made here in the UK. It was enough to put me right off though as I refuse to use PRC made cosmetic and skincare items for ethical reasons and it just didn’t sit right with me. I bet they thought no-one would notice, but I did!
