[purchase/affiliate] Right at the start of the first lock-down when it became apparent that masks would be a thing, I emailed my friend Nic in Japan asking if she’d seen any patterned versions or at least different colours thinking if that trend would start anywhere, it would be there. For months there was nothing but the standard blue/white versions with an occasional foray into black.
Now, several months on, they’re everywhere! You can get butterflies, lace, leopard print – almost whatever you want really (although sadly, the Hello Kitty versions are still just for kids.. 🙁 ). This post is more of an observance of an emerging trend which I feel will only get bigger and bigger because you must be your own judge of what is an acceptable mask for you. It’s not something for me to recommend although the brand that has stood out to me is NUUR – made in China but with a UK distributor – and those are the ones I’ve ordered for myself.
I wish I’d spotted these before Christmas because they would have been great make-weight gifts and stocking fillers.

I’m completely used to wearing face masks now – it doesn’t feel strange or weird at all – I’m kind of wondering why we didn’t adopt a similar mask wearing culture when we have coughs and colds as other countries. Anyway, as I say, you must be your own judge, but NUUR masks are £3.99 for ten HERE, non-affiliate HERE. It’s an Amazon link but I can’t find these anywhere else – yet!

I know they are not as eco friendly but I do feel safer using disposable masks.
They’re nice aren’t they – just to ring the changes.
Just a note on these kind of masks that may interest people if they have sensitive skin… Apparently the dye can be really irritating if you have rosacea, eczema or heightened sensitivity. I had no clue until a colleague with rosacea bought some black dyed ones and they irritated her no end!

Thanks for pointing these out. I like to keep a packet of masks in the car so I’ve gone for the paisley ones. Of all the facemasks that I have tried I found Lakeland’s Kanguru cotton masks the most comfortable (no wire at the top) and easy to breathe through.
Has anyone found a solution for misted up glasses? Even putting my glasses on top of my mask in the current weather I’m having to take my glasses off when I’m outside.
You can get anti-fog products for glasses but mostly I’ve seen people saying that you need the wired masks so you can create a really good seal over your nose and along so that the air isn’t going towards your eyes.
Yes the best thing to stop glasses fogging up is a multi-layered cotton mask (to absorb your breath), with a metal bar at the top to get a really good fit over your nose. Pockets for filters also help – if you fold some tissue/kitchen roll and place it in the pocket it will help absorb the steam from your breath further.
