Detangling brushes are a whole new brush category – funny to think they didn’t really exist in any meaningful way until the Tangle Teezer and yet, knotty hair has been a problem since time began (I imagine!).
The Michael Van Clarke No.1 Brush is putting the luxury into the category – forget injection moulded plastic – these bristles are placed in the base in the traditional way which helps them move with the hair rather than being rigidly in place.

But, I suppose now I think about it, the ideal brush through would not be demanding on the ears in any way. Michael Van Clarke’s team put their prototype of the No.1 Brush in the hands of ten stylists, along with 9 other detangling brushes, branding obscured. Nine of the ten chose the No.1 brush as top. One thing you can’t really do with Tangle Teezer is style your hair – it’s a knot-out job only – but you can with the No.1. I’ve been using this since it arrived last week and there is just no doubt that it’s at the top of its game. I’ve used plenty of detanglers and then stopped using them because they don’t feel like proper brushes – this one feels like a regular brush in the hold but has a more silky run through and tackles tangles brilliantly.

The brush is a mix of long and short, highly flexible bristles – importantly, it feels gentle on the hair; detanglers can feel a bit savage. The Michael Van Clarke No.1 Brush hasn’t launched yet – I have a prototype here so I don’t have details of pricing (don’t expect a budget price) or exact launch date, but I bet we’ll see this everywhere as an editor favourite. I’m genuinely baffled by this sudden onslaught of detangling brushes. The whole world & it’s wife seem to have one!
I don’t think I’ve ever had tangled hair in my life & I’m sure I can’t be the only one?! If you have long curly hair, for example, I can see how this might be an issue but surely not a huge majority of women?
Can’t help but think this ‘tangle brush’ epidemic is a very clever marketing trick that’s got everyone jumping on the bandwagon thinking they must NEED one.
Lucky you! I have fine, very tangly hair and the tangle teaser has been a god-send for me. I can finally have long hair without being in pain every time I brush it. This is even with de-tangling conditioner.
