[unpaid/sample/affiliate/ad] It’s funny (not) that this product is being sold as a defence against ‘premature scalp ageing’ when in actual fact, it stands very well on its own two feet as a general scalp soother. My scalp (sorry for the upcoming overshare) has been an absolute mess – literally such big flake masses that they feel like scabs. I’m pouring anything and everything onto it in the hopes of bringing it back around. I am convinced that it’s connected with the hair shedding which in turn I am convinced is a side effect of Covid.
I’ve been very impressed with the Aveda Scalp Solutions Overnight Renewal Serum – it feels fresh on application and is easy to apply by just dotting small drops over the scalp through the hair. It doesn’t leave any residue and a night time application means it can just quietly do its work while you sleep. I think reading between the lines ‘scalp ageing’ could be translated as scalp dryness, whether it’s sensitivity or lack of suppleness. I’m less sceptical about microbiomes when it comes to scalps – something is clearly disrupted with mine and I’m welcoming the ferment this contains to add some healthy bacteria to it. It also contains ectoin which I am seeing crop up a lot – it’s a great hydrator, while hyaluronic acid backs it up. Ginger root gives the immediate cooling feel – it’s a little bit spicy and in fact, made me think perhaps the formula contains some sort of enzymatic exfoliator which it doesn’t seem to do (although there is a separate product with salicylic acid which does HERE). Soothing comes via Tiger Grass which sits very nicely in the top five ingredients.
I’m always impressed with something that works very quickly – this definitely gave an overnight moisture bath to my scalp and I could feel the difference. On checking brand stats, one use equals 51% improvement in scalp hydration and gets incrementally higher the more you use it. It smells pleasant too – citrus and lavender – so the only thing I don’t love about this is the price – £42. I’ve checked across the internet and while it is cheaper at Sephora (slightly), on the Aveda site, postage is free over £40 so it just qualifies, and you get two free samples, so it seems to be the better option. It’s HERE, and the exfoliating treatment which I will try this week is from £12 HERE. Oh, I forgot to mention the brush! It’s £27 HERE and should be used as a scalp stimulator, massager and exfoliator. I love it but am being extremely gentle with it just pressing to my head and wiggling it rather than getting down to it properly. Those bristles are sharp enough to create a tingle and feel like your head skin is getting some proper, worthwhile attention.

Hello Jane!
I have to say that I have suffered the same and it had driven me crazy- I even checked for nits!
Philip Kingsley Itchy Flakey range is the only one which works, but because the shampoo 1 litre cost £55 even on offer I cannot always afford it. I have also used some general facial exfoliate on it and it works too. I really highly recommend it x
Glad it’s not just me – I don’t have excessive itching at the moment thankfully, but my yoga mat always ends up looking like it’s been snowed on. I *think* it’s starting to calm down.. I hope so anyway.
Oh I forgot to say – The Body Shop Ginger Shampoo was great for me when I had mild flaking.
I really did like the ginger one too but I love 1 litre bottles xx
yes, a 1 litre bottle is a thing of joy!
Hi Jane, my scalp has the occasional mad meltdown (they seem to happen at the change of seasons weirdly) and I get those horrid scabby flakes you are describing. I find regular use of the Philip Kingsley flakey scalp shampoo mostly keeps it at bay but when it does get bad I have used Ameliorate Transforming Scalp Serum with great success. You massage it in and leave it overnight a couple of times a week until things clear up. They have an exfoliating product to follow it up with the next morning before shampooing , I haven’t tried this but I hear very good things. Worth a go!
Ah yes, that’s interesting re seasons. Lots of people raving about Philip Kingsley – I’ve used their products in the past and they’re absolutely
lovely but not used that particular one. I’m pretty pleased with Aveda so far …
This sounds looovely stuff for scalp soothe-ation. I may well add it to my regime!
Have you tried the Maui range of potions Jane? They have some lovely shampoos which have worked wonders on my badly behaved, red dyed locks. They are SLS free and plenty different formula to choose from. Sending healing vibes to your scalp xxx
Yes actually, I hear really good things about Maui! Thanks for the vibes :-)))
Read this while en route to Belfast…so just had to treat myself to this when I got there, not to mention the JVN conditioning mist!
Let me know how you get on!
Long time reader here! Love your posts 🙂 it might be worth getting tested for vitamin d deficiency Re the hair loss. I started taking it as I was v low and it’s helped massively.
I’m already taking it but thank you so much 🙂
Hairdresser here. The shedding is 100% related to covid, the last two-three years have been unlike anything before for mass hair loss amongst clients. Massaging an oil or serum in over night then washing in the morning with your scalp brush will help to move the flakes and keep your scalp moisturised! I had hair shedding last year due to covid and found it improving over a few months.
Thank you so much Alison – that’s very reassuring to hear. x
