[unpaid/sample] The new Rouge Dior Natural Balm is very different to my expectations – for some reason I thought it would be glossier and more juicy like my favourite Gucci Rene Pink Balm. But, I know very well that juicy is not what many are looking for in their balms. They want a protective shield with a dot of colour that feels comfortable and at home on the lip and that’s exactly what Rouge Dior Natural Balm is!
Dior has introduced a matte balm and it’s not something I think I’ve used before. At least, if I have, it hasn’t stayed in my memory. And, to be honest, I think I’d always go satin or juicy in preference – I’m sure it’s down to the fact that I am so used to juicy or loose balm textures that matte feels very strange indeed. But, what a bonus for anyone who loves a matte lipstick and wants something nourishing underneath it – the two pair as well together as champagne and caviar.
Dior has more or less kicked shine into touch. The textures available are satin, matte and velvet which is unusual for a balm formula. The ‘natural’ label comes from the floral complex – pomegranate flower, fig blossom and red hibiscus and in its entirety, the balms are composed of 95% natural origin ingredients. They’re also refillable.
The shade range is firmly in the neutral camp – there are no brights in the collection as yet although I am sure that palette is yet to come. These balms work very nicely as a primer or undercoat for the lips as well as providing a natural looking finish to the lips if wearing alone. I noticed that my lips felt extremely smooth while (and after) wearing which makes me feel more comfortable about the £33 price tag. They do feel as though they’re doing a nourishing job.
In the swatch above, it’s shade 772 Rosewood shade (very pretty), 100 Light Nude and 200 Terra Bella which is matte. The other two are satin. These are spot on for the less-is-more trend that we adopted over lockdown and haven’t quite got back to rainbows yet. They’re HERE.

Lovely stuff, I like a hint of colour treatment lip product. I have both the Chanel Rouge Coco Baume and EL’s big breath Pure Color Revitalizing Crystal Balm to alternate with Biossance and Burt’s Bees. Their formula have a similar format: stick, soft / more waxy feel and very comfortable with a hint of very pretty colour (EL has more colour than Chanel). Again not glossy / slightly sheeny and seem to hold on the lip a bit longer than a stickier product. I wonder if a new lip balm formula has launched and the brands are all on it…. I highly recommend! Thank you Jane, great review. xxx
Yes, that’s a good point re formula – I’m just experimenting at the moment with barrier balms mixed with lipstick to create coloured balms .. cheap way to do it.
Happy mixing Jane, be interesting to hear how you get on. I might have a go too! Have a good weekend x
thank you!
This is so interesting – a matte balm sounds really appealing! I have used the Chanel Rouge Coco Baume as well, and also an Estee Lauder one, Pure Colour Envy Colour Replenish Lip Balm, and both were stylish and effective. This winter has made my lips so dry, though, so I bought a new Dior recently (when getting a new matte Christmas lipstick). What the sales assistant recommended was the Dior Addict Lip Glow Colour Reviver Balm, which has a slight freshness to it but no plumping or tingly effect (phew – I hate things like that, and Dior does do some plumping lip products which I am keen to avoid). It has the same packaging as the other Dior Addict lipsticks and has worked incredibly well – very hydrating and a pleasant balm on its own, but the finish is so glossy that a matte, nourishing balm seems like a brilliant idea – I do love my matte lipsticks. Thank you Jane, hope you have a lovely weekend!
I think maybe you could overnight with a shiny one – Biossance I swear by or Lanolips and really help with dryness. Then for day, while you won’t get the same level of balminess you can use the matte ? : -)
Oh I’m keen to try these. I just always tegret lipstick buys as 9/10 I just cant tolerate them. The matt texture you describe sounds like one that Nars does. It was lush actually and is a very comfortable wear, even for me. I only dont use it alot because the colour is very pinky and it doesn’t suit me. Im more of a muted/winter coral type.
They are nice I must agree – I prefer the kind of shiny feel to be honest so I can’t get along with the matte :-))
Dior make stunning lipsticks!
