Thanks for the sympathy – it’s so frustrating because I used to have lovely nails and adored painting them. I only occasionally get the paint out but usually there’s nothing to paint and like you, summer is an improvement usually, but not this year.

I always hope for lovely nails around Christmas & my birthday in January, & always wear gloves for washing up/cleaning & gardening, but every year from the beginning of December my nails start to break, flake & peel until they’re so short & unattractive that I just want to hide them away! If I ever do manage to paint them over this period I certainly pay for it as the condition is even worse. I succumb to the marketing of various oils & creams promising great things but nothing works. Like Hannah, I end up just leaving them alone, filing only when I get a raggy edge & then they seem to be happy. In the warm months they grow so much I can’t keep up with them but it never lasts. They definitely don’t like having paint on them, sadly

Everything I tried (every sort of strengthener, base coat, warm oil soaks and supplements) made no difference. In May I abandoned all hope and stopped treating them. They’ve sorted themselves out now, which I can either put down to the weather, or being left alone to sort themselves out.

Oh I’m with you on this one but I bet you my nails are worse than yours. They are awful! Oil helps the most, applied as often as I remember to. The worst thing is not wearing rubber gloves when my hands are in water and detergent, or gardening gloves when I’m working outside. I look forward to hearing how you get on with this. Mavala products,are usually really good.

Not Mavala related, but re: nail polish remover and drying out nails which are already feeling grumpy. Can I suggest Nailfix and Chill polish remover cream. I think you actually introduced me to this some years ago. It’s very gentle and moisturising. Whilst it takes longer to remove varnish, my nails don’t feel dried out by its use.
