[unpaid/sample] Ooh, well it does feel time for some Parisienne chic, doesn’t it? Incoming is Guerlain’s new Rouge G Luxurious Velvet Matte lipstick – the first creation for the brand by their new creative director, Violette Surrat. I think we are going to see some major changes across this brand which has been steadily constant in its output for many years. Violette has had an interesting career as make up artist and vlogger, a Dior Makeup Designer then onward to Guerlain via Estee Lauder where she spent time as Global Beauty Director.
These are very sumptuous mattes – the kind of earthy, stone matte that makes me wish I could wear them as easily as I can wear glossy tints. They’re not the kind of lipsticks that you can apply in the dark – this is a proper sit-down job to apply absolutely meticulously and perfectly in the almost forgotten ritual of attention to detail.
There are six new cases, all of which feature textiles that are rustic or tweedy in nature. I immediately want a handbag in all of them for winter and failing that, cushion covers! The two I have here are French Chevron (black and white) and Tweed in Paris (red) – it’s an interesting hand feel with the warmth of the fabric and the cool of the metal case.
In the Rouge G Luxurious Velvet Matte Lipstick, I have Black Red and Flame Red – both full on with the drama. I’m having to transport myself well into autumn and think black polo sweaters and leather jackets for both of these because they don’t feel quite right for exactly now. But, they are big on pigment and surprisingly soft on the lips (mango butter, thank you – and silk wood extracts to do the mattifying). Once on, they’re the kind of colours that you probably want to drink your wine from a straw while wearing – they stay but you have to maintain it and I don’t like to lose the bit in the middle which on me, at least, always fades first.
Please excuse the scratch on my arm courtesy of my rose bush! But, you can see the shades are deep impactful. Flame Red has a distinct orange tone to it while Black Red is almost wicked! I’m going to put a slick of gloss over that and make it into an Instagram post I think (if courage prevails!). The cases are £32 (they flip open to reveal a mirror so you’re never caught out with reapplication) and the lipsticks are £26 HERE.

Wow, impressive! The dark shade reminds me a bit of Lisa Eldridge’s Velvet Jazz… Not sure though how do I feel about cases with textile parts (you know, dog’s lick, coffee leak, whatever smudgy that can occur in my purse… world’s full of dangers!) – they look very posh, but practicality…
I thought about that too but they’re in the darker shade spectrum presumably so dirt doesn’t show. If it was white silk I’d have an issue! :-))
White silk!!! That would be totally sadistic… 😀
I am liking these fabrics and colours very much! Uh ohhh… another case of BBB made me buy it 🙂 Anna you could try treating these with a leather / shoe stain protector spray – it worked wonders on a light colour Orla Kiely purse I have. A good spray shouldn’t damage the fabric. Hope this helps. xx
Good idea – thanks Chrissie :-))
Wow, that’s a great tip! Thanks, Chrissie!
The deep Black Red shade is quite lovely. It reminds me a bit of LE’s Velvet Myth.
I am curious if you have tried Ms. Serrat’s own brand, Violette_FR? I believe she launched this line before signing to Guerlain. I have mixed feelings about the product I bought, the Yeux Paint cream eyeshadow. I loved its gorgeous pearl blue shade color, but I found its application a total headache. The combination of a thick cream formula and a large doe foot applicator resulted in a (literal) irritating mess on my eyes. The brand has a very “effortless cool French girl” feel, which unfortunately for me, whose modus operandi is more “awkward middle aged woman,” did not translate well.
I haven’t tried it but very interested to hear your experience. I hear you on the cool Parisienne and I can’t do it either!
Beautiful cases, but why does the red one remind me of a scarab beetle? Cant unsee it now lol!
I thought that too! There is definitely something scarab about them :-))
