I was at an event last night (more of which later because there is so much to tell!) and one of the innovative products flagged up was Solar D, an Australian sunscreen brand.
What’s special about Solar D Sunscreen is that it allows some vitamin D to reach your body, unlike other sunscreens. We’re all so obsessed about never showing our faces to the sun that Vitamin D, which is vital to health, never reaches us in enough quantities to do its job. In fact, on the rise in Australia are both rickets and osteoporosis. Vitamin D is essential for both optimum bone and muscle function.
The way Solar D works is to allow some UVB rays to hit the surface of the skin, but still blocking up to 98% of UVA rays. Clearly, this is some very forward thinking innovation in sun care – it seems that there’s a pay-off for everything; while skin cancers can be prevented by using SPF, you don’t necessarily want to trade that off for osteoporosis and nor do you want your kids to develop rickets. People really do suffer for lack of vitamin D – young and old alike, so maybe this is the breakthough that we’ve been waiting for that allows for vitamin D absorption without its health implications.
If you want to read more about the brand, Solar D Sunscreen is HERE.

The lack of Vitamin D here in UK is a known fact. When I went to a dermatologist the first thing they said to me to take vitamid d supliments. We don’t need a lot of supliments as we get everythign from food but the sun factor…. now that’s a different thing. I would actually get this sunscreen as I want Vitamin D to reach my skin and be processed by my body.
