[unpaid/sample/affiliate/ad] We gave up on real Christmas trees a couple of years ago and invested in a very beautiful faux tree instead. I’d like to say it was on eco-grounds and re-usability and not needlessly taking down a living tree but in fact it was more swayed by the fact that I swear fir trees have got fatter over the years and we don’t have the right space for something that swings out of its netting to be as broad as it is tall. Our narrow tree has solved the problem of endlessly fighting branches to get to the bookcase or to turn off the lamp. And, we have it forever now. We got the 6ft Alpine HERE. Anyway, a long way around to saying that even though we don’t have a natural tree, I still like the fir scent in the house. Last year, I put a Jo Malone London Pine & Eucalyptus Reed Diffuser HERE behind it on the floor and it absolutely worked to give a pine scent that got stronger the nearer you got to the tree.

Goutal Paris Une Foret D’Or Candle

This year I don’t have a diffuser but the Goutal Paris Une Foret D’Or Candle is more than up to the job of creating a pine infused well being scent around the house. It’s very generous in throw with warming orange notes amongst the resins. It’s very definitely the smell of a Christmas household if you have a traditional Christmas with mince pies, mulled wine and general bonhomie and if you’re like almost every other house at this stressful time where none of those things apply, it will give the impression that you are at your happiest running out of wrapping paper and don’t feel like slapping the next person who asks what’s for dinner round the head with a cracker.

Goutal Paris Une Foret D’Or Candle

This candle is a masterclass in ambience creation – really, truly beautiful. It’s £65 which is pretty pricy but is sold out in most places other than Jarrold’s HERE. You can get smaller versions for £49 HERE in a deep, green fluted glass. Alternatively a good tip is to slice an orange, put a few drops of pine oil onto a few of the slices and shove in the oven on a low heat. Literally, Lapland in your kitchen.
